Decan political art 1: this is the sign at the town limits. As in Peje and elsewhere, the Serbian language has been erased from public life; this act reveals the strength of feeling that maintains the current tensions.

  1. extremely interesting and tragic photos... funny how quickly something can be erased in the Balkans (I say with sarcasm).

  2. In the Jewish quarter of the old town of Jerusalem, the Arabic-language names have been vandalised on 'the vast majority' of street signs.

According to archaeologist and student of iconoclasm Troels Myrup Kristensen, '[t]his is only partially an act of erasure, and just as much part of an on-going negotiation between regional politics and the local environment of the streets'.
